Friday, April 12, 2013

Hey, people from Earth and other people who are not from here, for the next 7 weeks we will be giving you the awesomeness that is DIVERGENT by Veronica Roth.  Be sure to show up, because we are giving away some goodies, check it out HERE. Just a side note, I will be asking a question after each discussion post.  Be sure to follow the discussion and don’t be scared to join in on our discussion/ questions. Those who entered the contest will receive extra entries for answering a question.  Every week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, we will discuss three chapters per week: tell you about the plot, and other random bits of spicy goodness that you should definitely know about (all relating to Divergent).    Just for your curiosity: helping me out with this discussion is Jackie, one of my best friends (please say hello to her).  Basically these posts will be categorized by person.  Jackie hasn't read the book so be sure to read her first impressions while she reads along and if you have read Divergent, be sure to read my input (this will be the my second read through).  If you missed a post and want to check out the schedule, go HERE.  Come and join us in our quest of discussing DIVERGENT.

CHAPTER 18

Tris must go into the fear simulation, where she is attacked by a bunch of crows.  She must learn to control her fears.  Four discusses being Dauntless with her, afterwards.

Today's Topics:
Facing Fears and Four and Tris

At first when Tris was facing the crows, I didn’t quite understand what her fear was. But then I guess she must have felt helpless since she could not escape the crows from trying to hurt her. I also thought that the crows could represent a fear of death. Personally, I do not fear death since I grew up being told that we are all going to die someday, but we will not know when. So what is the point of fearing something that is inevitable and that we cannot foresee or predict? I’ve got to say though that I even felt my heart racing as Tris went through the test because I felt her fears. I think I’m getting too attached to this book. Anyway, I felt bad for how scared she was for when she woke up in the chair, but at least she only took three minutes! I seriously thought she took at least like 7-10 minutes from the way that her fear landscape sounded, but booyah to Tris!

Okay, when is Tris going to realize that Four likes her as more than a friend. I mean really now, I am oblivious to this kind of stuff, but not as much as Tris. At the same time though, I was not taught to be constantly selfless like Tris was in Abnegation, so I guess that might have something to do with her not recognizing the signs. …Or Four could always just paint a sign on his forehead that says, “Tris I seriously have the hots for you, and I want you to be my Dauntless Damsel.” Or some sign like that would probably help to give Tris at least a hint that he likes her. Oh well hopefully she finds out soon, I’m starting to lose my patience while waiting for her to realize this.

This fear simulation depicts poor Tris being attacked by a bunch of crows.  She is not afraid of crows however, so what is she afraid of?  For the amount of times that she calls out for help, she may be afraid of being helpless, stranded with no one to help her get through this.  However, it may even go deeper than that.

We got a private moment with Tris and Four.  How I love these two!  Four lets it slip that for the first time in his fear simulation, he was facing a person.  For those of you who have read it before, we know it’s his father.  I feel that having this snippet of opening up, even though he does not outright tell her who it is, is a fantastic way to show how their relationship is developing.  Love it.
