Divergent Book Discussion (16)

Monday, April 08, 2013

Hey, people from Earth and other people who are not from here, for the next 11 weeks we will be giving you the awesomeness that is DIVERGENT by Veronica Roth.  Be sure to show up, because we are giving away some goodies, check it out HERE. Just a side note, I will be asking a question after each discussion post.  Be sure to follow the discussion and don’t be scared to join in on our discussion/ questions. Those who entered the contest will receive extra entries for answering a question.  Every week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, we will discuss three chapters per week: tell you about the plot, and other random bits of spicy goodness that you should definitely know about (all relating to Divergent).    Just for your curiosity: helping me out with this discussion is Jackie, one of my best friends (please say hello to her).  Basically these posts will be categorized by person.  Jackie hasn't read the book so be sure to read her first impressions while she reads along and if you have read Divergent, be sure to read my input (this will be the my second read through).  If you missed a post and want to check out the schedule, go HERE.  Come and join us in our quest of discussing DIVERGENT.

It is the second round for the Dauntless transfers and we get to see their rankings.  Al needs some alone time.  Ed gets stabbed in the eye.  By the way things are looking, the Dauntless faction doesn’t seem so brave anymore.

Today's Topics:
Test Results and Tris' Secrets

So Tris was in sixth place, WOOHOO! (CAKE!) And what was even better was that after Drew or Peter (someone in that gang) stabbed Edward in the eye with a knife, that Tris got moved up to 5thplace since Edward and his girlfriend Myra left after that incident. I kind of think though that stabbing someone in the eye just because they beat you out of 1st place is a bit harsh even for a Dauntless. But that’s the Perfect Peter Pack for ya. So congrats to Tris, she hasn’t been kicked out yet! :D

Wow…wow…wow…Tris is a horrible liar. If I was talking to Tris, I would be able to see right through her act and know something was up. But I still want to know why being Divergent is something that has to be treated so “hush, hush” like. I mean the worst that can happen is that someone will kill you if they find out. Since we are all going to die someday, I don’t see why the secret is so vital to keep. Maybe I am just being emotionless here, but as a Dauntless shouldn’t Tris be doing a better job of pretending that she isn’t afraid? Isn’t that the whole point of Dauntless?!

I can only assume when I made the topic list that I meant the results of each ranking, which leads up to Ed getting stabbed in the eye.  First off, let’s talk about the state of Al in this chapter.  He is hiding from his parents because he does not want to have to tell them how he is doing.  These are definitely signs that he is depressed.  Al is moody and sad and it is most evident when he reaches out to Tris for help.  Yes, Al reaches out in a way that seems personal and flirtatious but, as a friend, this was the moment he needed her or just a friend.  Tris rejects him.

I can’t hate Tris for rejecting him because it turns awkward real fast.  However, seeing the state he was in and knowing what is going to happen—I just wished that Tris would stay put, reject him but stay where she was and talk it out.  Have a long talk about rankings, feelings, parents, whatever.  Just let Al get it all out because he needed a friend, he didn’t need a rejection.

Now Ed getting stabbed with a butter knife just makes me dislike Peter even more.  There is no reason he should have done that.  Plus, what was up with Drew in this chapter?  Yeah, don’t like them both.  Edward was stabbed with a butter knife.  A butter knife.  That would take some strength.  The fact that Drew and Peter were not disqualified from the program, goes to show how messed up this faction really is.

Why do you think the Dauntless secret is so important to keep hidden from everyone?
