Divergent Book Discussion (7)

Monday, March 18, 2013

Hey, people from Earth and other people who are not from here, for the next 12 weeks we will be giving you the awesomeness that is DIVERGENT by Veronica Roth.  Be sure to show up, because we are giving away some goodies, check it out HERE. Just a side note, I will be asking a question after each discussion post.  Be sure to follow the discussion and don’t be scared to join in on our discussion/ questions. Those who entered the contest will receive extra entries for answering a question.  Every week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, we will discuss three chapters per week: tell you about the plot, and other random bits of spicy goodness that you should definitely know about (all relating to Divergent).    Just for your curiosity: helping me out with this discussion is Jackie, one of my best friends (please say hello to her).  Basically these posts will be categorized by person.  Jackie hasn't read the book so be sure to read her first impressions while she reads along and if you have read Divergent, be sure to read my input (this will be the my second read through).  If you missed a post and want to check out the schedule, go HERE.  Come and join us in our quest of discussing DIVERGENT.

Four is our tour group leader, also overseeing the initiation process for the next weeks.  Readers get Dauntless transfers get a tour of the place and some lunch.  Christina has a big mouth and Al likes to cry.  If initiates do not make membership, they will become factionless.  Let the challenge begin!

Today's Topics:
Dauntless Headquarters and Tris's Fears

A cave in the middle of who knows where sounds lovely! NOT! Caves are nice and all, but one as dangerous as the Dauntless one (I know, it’s supposed to be perilous to challenge the Dauntless initiates), no thanks, I’m good. Gotta say though, a cave setup is interesting, I definitely didn’t expect that to be the basis of Dauntless Headquarters, but hey, sounds intriguing. On a side note, TRIS HAS NEVER HAD A HAMBURGER?! ABNEGATION, WHAT THE HELL? NO PLEASURE FOOD? NOT EVEN A BURGER?! THAT’S UNAMERICAN. …But still, everybody needs burgers. It’s a necessity of life. Good thing Tris got out of Abnegation. No hamburgers, pshhh. It’s a stupid faction anyway. Tris challenges Four. Hehe. And I want to meet Eric, he sounds awesome! :D

Right now, I know Tris’s main fear is not getting through initiation and becoming factionless. I feel for Al too. Both of them miss home a lot, but they need to hide their fears, I mean Dauntless is all about overcoming fears and being brave. I know that Tris equates being factionless to being a failure in life. For her sake, I hope she makes it into Dauntless. I think she would commit suicide if she became factionless. She needs something to keep her stable, and at least being Dauntless will help her to do that.

Dauntless headquarters sounds awesome!  I would love to check it out, maybe not live there but definitely check it out.  I think it fits well with what Dauntless stands for.  The Chasm shows how dangerous headquarters can be, if you're not careful.  I love that it is basically in the middle of everything.  Plus, they have the Pit and some of the pathways are made of glass (if I remember correctly from later chapters).  Veronica Roth put a lot of thought, it seems, into creating this place as unique as ever.  It is exciting to think of how it will be structured in the film because I am sure everyone has a different picture in their mind when they think of Dauntless HQ. Now Jackie mentions Tris never having a hamburger which is interesting.  As much as I don't think there is anything wrong with that, it makes me wonder what Abnegation food is really like.  Do they even eat meat?  Also, we get to listen to Christina smart-mouth her way through the first day.  She has never been my favorite character, just for the reason that she seems to be always talking.  However, Tris seemed to cross her boundaries with Four, asking him where he came from.  Without giving away where Four came from, I just want to say that I loved the fact that he decided to help Tris along on her first day, with the food.  Reading it again and taking Four's past into account, I love him even more.

Of course, Tris is scared of not making it to Dauntless membership.  And the scene where we are introduced to Al sums up his character so well.  Here is this guy, who looks board and large but who is weak and crying.  It was the perfect introduction to his character.  Love!

What kind of food, do you think, Abnegation eats?
