CHAPTER ONE
Readers get a first look at the life of an Abnegation girl. The scene opens up with Beatrice, the main character, getting her hair cut by her mother. The Choosing Ceremony, where young people get to choose what faction they want to live and thrive in for the rest of their lives, is coming up soon. The teens must go through an aptitude test to discover what faction is right for them. However, Beatrice has already made her choice.
Today's topics:
Abnegation and Foul Factions
Selflessness is an important quality to have, but the Abnegation can’t even look in mirrors? I mean, that is kind of nuts. How can someone be selfless all the time? THAT CAN’T BE POSSIBLE. I also wonder why a person can’t be in multiple factions, I mean, don’t they have other characteristics besides being selfless? I know I would, just like Beatrice. Speaking of her, she doesn’t seem to be too great with the whole “selfless” thing, but her brother seems to fit into Abnegation traits flawlessly. I hope Beatrice doesn’t stay in this faction because (no offense to Abnegation), but the plain clothing and seemingly monochromatic life is really boring and uninteresting.
Okay so there are Amity (peace), Erudite (knowledge), Abnegation (selflessness), Dauntless (bravery), and Candor (truth). My question is though, why can’t people be in multiple factions at once? Did some big war or something really bad happen, so the people in charge decided to separate the people into these groups based on their strongest personality traits? Or is it that the government just wants to limit its civilians so that they won’t rebel against the system? I guess I will find out! By the way, I thought that the Dauntless having to jump off the trains was ducking g halatious. With this, I don’t know whether to call the Dauntless courageous or foolish.
So we have Abnegation: the selfless faction. You have to give them credit because I would never be able to put up with any of their ways. Well, maybe some of them but not all of them. No mirrors? Or no mirrors for three months? How can they do it? I need a mirror to do my hair and things. This definitely goes on the list next to vampires... Abnegation faction.
It is hilarious how well Caleb fits into Abnegation. He seems like a robot with his responses. However, I always get the feeling when Caleb questions Beatrice about being nervous for the aptitude test that he is mocking her which would not be a very Abnegation thing to do.
It would suck being in the Abnegation faction. The poor treatment Beatrice receives at school makes me want to yell at them. As an Abnegation, she has to just take all the name calling and bullying. Plus, I hate what they call the Abnegation: "Stiff." Being selfless is really difficult and I think all factions should be more respective toward Abnegation.
The factions, in general, are awesome. My favorite has got to be Dauntless, for obvious reasons but I like Candor too. If you want to learn why there are individual factions like this then you will have to read Insurgent. To keep all of the factions straight, I found this on Tumblr (source: bookworm) for you all:
The Choosing Ceremony is coming up. Which faction would you choose to spend the rest of your life in?

Definitely not Abnegation, I think I would choose Erudite faction
ReplyDeleteYea Mirror Girl, no way you could handle that. I personally think that people can never fit into a label that describes them. No matter how hard we try to fit ourselves into one label, there is no way that we always will be able to follow through with doing the same, monotonous activities over and over again, we get bored! So, as to answer the question, I would become Factionless and just be my own person. :)
