Teaser Tuesday (The Water Wars)

Monday, February 07, 2011

It's Tuesday already? I have to admit that time seems to be zipping by my at rapid fire pace lately. You guys may have seem me complaining about a couple college papers on Twitter over the weekend. Then there's the actual classes, the dramas of high school, the stupidity of people who feel the need to liberally spread their stupidity, all that jazz.

Without further ado, I bring you a teaser on the book that has sapped all my recent spare time: The Water Wars. Teaser Tuesday is hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading.

Rules:
1. Grab what you are currently reading and open to a random page
2. Share 2 sentences from that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

Teaser:

"Our republic - Illinowa - was all that remained of the Midwestern pieces of the old United States, and the only thing left to govern was water. The decisions made by the [Water Authority Board] in Basin could mean life or death for the rest of us."
-The Water Wars by Cameron Stracher, page 8
This book is great! I described it to Gina as "The Hunger Games, but instead of them fighting to survive, they're fighting for water". I actually have the ARC copy of this book (pictured) and I'll confess that I like this cover better than the actual cover (check out the real cover here).

This book is a dystopian novel that welcomes readers to "a future where water is more precious than oil or gold". The main character, Vera, and her brother Will, are teenagers trying to survive in this desert wasteland of a nation. There's been allusions to a war between the United States and Canada resulting in Canadian dams cutting off all American water supplies. What little water trickles down is rationed, chemically reproduced, and sold to the dehydrated Americans.

Vera meets Kai, a Driller's son, one of the few people who has access to a steady source of water. Over time, they begin to fall in love. Then Kai reveals that the Water Authority Board is lying to the people, and that there's something going on that needs to be rectified, soon, or else. But then Kai disappears...

So far, this is promising to be a great read. It almost hurts to put it down and actually pay attention in class.. good thing I've perfected the sneaky reading-under-the-desk maneuver!

What are you reading that's got you hooked?
