10 Books I Can't Believe I Read

Tuesday, January 30, 2018

I've been blogger for over 7 years now. And I've been an avid reader even before that. So, I can bet that my bookshelves are filled with books that you can't even imagine I would read. For example, on my shelves, I have a small section for science fiction. And I don't even read science fiction so what's up with that?

In the past- and even now, I admit, I pick up a variety of books that surprise even me. Whether these books are way out of my comfort zone or just not for me, I still read them. Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is: Top Ten Books I Can't Believe I Read.

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness: I don't know what initially drew me to this book but I still can't believe I've read it. One of the characters is a talking dog! I don't read books with talking animals, it's a rule of mine; I just can't do it.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff: Remember my science fiction section? I'm not crazy about science fiction but Illuminae was pretty amazing and it has one of my favorite villains ever!

The Martian by Andy Weir: This one is so far out of my comfort zone, we are literally on a different planet. The movie was releasing and I wanted to know what all the buzz was about. Even though some of the science things did go right over my head, I really enjoyed this one.

Gone by Michael Grant: Dystopian has always been hit or miss with me. Gone sounded awesome in the beginning. Everyone wakes up to find that all the adults have disappeared. However, the book was a miss and it took me months to read. :(

The Maze Runner by James Dashner: Another dystopian that wasn't for me.

Eve and Adam by Michael Grant and Katherine Applegate: I have to say that I was probably drawn to this one because of the cover. It's gorgeous! Eve and Adam is also science fiction which is an out of my comfort zone genre. I enjoyed it, I remember.

The Cupid War by Timothy Carter: This one belongs on last week's list because I barely remember anything about this one. But Goodreads says I read it. And I do remember requesting it from the publisher. The Cupid War does not sound like something I would like. The protagonist dies and discovers that he is now Cupid and has to help young people fall in love.

Crank by Ellen Hopkins: Crank has two things I usually stay away from: verse and drug use and somehow I still read the book. Books in verse can be gorgeous but maybe I haven't been exposed to enough to really enjoy reading it.

Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley: At another blogger's recommendation, I read this. However, it's about a flying ship in the sky that houses a bunch of talking, singing birds. Not to mention my pile of unanswered questions, this book just wasn't for me.

Dearly, Departed by Lia Habel: Oh, this one is steampunk which is so cool! I haven't read many steampunk books and I would say that most steampunk novels are out of my comfort zone but I liked this one so I am willing to give more a try.

What books are you still surprised you've read?

  1. I love this blogging topic! So much fun. It seems like you aren't a huge fan of post-apocalyptic YA stories maybe? It was funny to me that all the books on your list that I'd read were those sort of YA books.
Great list and I love how thoughtful this was! Thanks!:)
