Kickin' It: June 2017

Friday, June 30, 2017

Kickin’ It is a feature at The Bucket List where I round-up the whole month in one post, bringing you reviews you may have missed, other awesome bookish things, and even what I’m currently obsessed with in other media besides books. June was such a fun month! It's officially summer and as much as the sun has been bringing the heat, we've also gotten so much rain too.  As far as reading goes, most of the books I've read this month were just okay. I was able to read 9 books this month and am super happy that I tackled the final book in The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, City of Heavenly Fire! Here's my wrap-up:

The Rose and the Dagger by Renee Ahdieh: This month, it was a contest between City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare or this one for best book of the month and this one gets to take the cake (or donuts? 😃). I read The Wrath and the Dawn last month and fell in love. As much as I was hoping for a little more magic in the sequel, we do get some hilarious adventures with a magic carpet. It was such a fun, beautiful read that goes beyond the retelling of the first.

Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han (4 stars): Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han is an adorable puppy dog of a book, it comes running up to you so happily and even when it leaves, the smile on your face doesn’t vanish. Jenny Han welcomed us into Lara Jean’s realistic and fantastic life and, though this is the last book, Lara Jean will always and forever stay in our hearts.

Empire of Dust by Eleanor Herman (4 stars): Empire of Dust is on a scale of its own, standing tall next to Legacy of Kings. It is certainly another masterpiece of Eleanor Herman’s that will leave you enchanted until the next book releases.

99 Days by Katie Cotugno (3 stars): 99 Days by Kate Cotugno was a letdown but had a resonating message and a fresh narrative which will be sure to keep you reading to the end.

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas (5 stars): A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas is so perfect, so important, so filled with everything. I found myself going back and rereading parts that I loved, that I needed to relive again even if it was only moments ago. This book is a treasure.

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas (4 stars): A Court of Wings and Ruin is a bit of a disappointment, overshadowed by the absolute perfection of the second book, A Court of Mist and Fury.

Things We Know By Heart by Jessi Kirby (4/21/15): So I was browsing over at BookOutlet because I recently found out that they existed and saw this book on there. I checked out what it was about and not only does it sound like something I would love, it sounds exactly like a kdrama I watched last year. When her boyfriend's heart is donated to a boy in need, Quinn finds an unexpected connection with him.

The Bone Queen by Alison Croggon (6/17): I didn't know this was releasing but here it is. It's the prequel to The Books of Pellinor series, an epic fantasy series that I adored when I was in high school. Here's to hoping the prequel is as awesome as the series!

Lucky in Love by Kasie West (7/25/17): Kasie West has long since been one of my many auto-buy authors. I don't know what this is about but I do know that it will be fabulous!

Because You Love to Hate Me edited by Ameriie (7/11/17): This book is going to be awesome! 13 Booktubers gave writing prompts to 13 authors to spin gorgeous classic fairy tales into a web of their own making, where the villains take center stage.

I saw Wonder Woman this month and it was everything I was hoping it to be and more. I adored the female-dominated cast and loved the story as well as all the characters. I cannot wait for the sequel and to see Gal Gadot in other movies! I, also, saw Life which was a bit of a disappointment. I was expecting some fear factor to be in play when an alien is terrorizing a space ship but the movie totally fell flat for me.

I stumbled across a few videos on YouTube that I incredibly enjoyed. First, Jimmy Kimmel sent Mr. Robot's Rami Malek, in character, to the Ice Cream Museum. I was immediately in giggles after that. If you don't watch Mr. Robot, it's a magnificent show about a group of computer hackers (I can't explain it without giving too much away or fangirling too much 😋). Second, which is book related but JOHN GREEN ANNOUNCED HIS NEW BOOK and I am now currently counting down the days until it releases. And finally, I'm going to see the play, Anastasia on Broadway on Sunday so I've been obsessively watching covers of the songs and discovered this awesome one by Evynne and Peter Hollens.

How was your June? Read any awesome books this month? Did you see Wonder Woman? Did you love it?
