Top Six Books that Weren't My Typical Genre

Tuesday, February 23, 2016

It's been a long time, my friends. I haven't posted in a while. And in truth, I'm still battling a reading slump.  If you guys know of any awesome books to help me out of the slump, I would love to hear them.

Since last time, I've been working hard in building a new website (a travel and lifestyle blog) and thinking about transferring this one over to Wordpress (maybe...).  It's been five lovely years on Blogger but I want to expand.  While I'm writing posts, and coming up with new features for all of you, I wanted to take part in this week's Top Ten Tuesday.

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  This week's topic is: Top Ten Books that Weren't My Typical Genre.  But since I read almost every genre, I picked out six of my most outlandish books that I probably wouldn't have picked up if it wasn't for some blogging friends' prodding. :)

Not If I See You First by Eric Lindstrom (12/1/15): Ever since I graduated college, I've been reading less and less about teens in high school.  I don't know what it is. However, I really enjoyed the message Lindstrom gave with this one and as much as the setting was definitely my scene, it was still good.

Grace and the Guiltless by Erin Johnson (8/1/14): Before this, I never read a western. I just pictured the laughable showdowns with boys lassoing cattle and shooting guns. Grace took me by the surprise because I absolutely loved it.

Kill the Boy Band by Goldy Moldavsky (2/23/16): Four girls are obsessed with the band, The Repurts, which consists of four boys named Rupert. When they accidentally kidnap one, their perspectives on the boys and boy bands, in general, begin to change.  This book is so strange and I would have never picked it up if I hadn't been interested in how far these girls would go to get with the ones they admired. The book is so out of my comfort zone but it was interesting.

Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch (10/14/14): Can you believe that I barely read any fantasy?  I really love the genre but never read it. Maybe because the mind blowing world building gets me so invested so I usually wait until the end of the series to finally pick up the first so I can read them all in one go.  Snow Like Ashes was the exception, of course, because I read it before the sequel released. It wasn't outside of my comfort zone as it was so in my comfort zone that I couldn't stop reading. It was that good. I need to read more fantasy/ dystopian.

The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich (9/15/15): I'm all about scaring myself with movies and hiding under blankets for hours afterwards. But I'm not one to read horror novels.  It always seems too quiet, with just the words you're reading echoing in your own head that gets me.  It's freaky. The Dead House was definitely strange but thrilling. It did give me nightmares though but I'm sure that's what Kurtagich was going for.

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey (5/7/13): I'm mentioning this one because the movie released recently and re-enlightened me on my love for this awesome book. I never read science fiction.  Ever. I don't do the whole alien scene or the end of the world or some crazy scientist's explanation. It's just not for me. But this one was surprisingly really good.

What books have you read outside your comfort zone?

  2. I've been wanting to read The Dead House since I heard of it! I recently read Eleanor by Jason Gurley and that was outside of my comfort zone, but I found that I really did enjoy it!
