Teaser:
"But I got the feeling they found something about him familiar. Like someone they'd seen on TV, in a movie, a local politician, or someone vaguely famous. They would have recognized him right away if he'd been wearing his mask."-Hero by Perry Moore, page 2
Author: Perry Moore
Pages: 432
Publisher: Hyperion Book CH
Publication Date: September 1st, 2007
This book is about a conventionally untouched subject: gay superheroes. If you're thinking something along the lines of "Really? That's a book subject now? Is nothing sacred?", you would have liked to sneak a snapshot of my face when I figured out that this was not your normal, everyday boy-discovers-super-powers book. However, I kept reading (I'm a sucker for superheroes, I'll admit it.) and found Thom's story to actually be more than an emotional plea to readers for acceptance; it is a story about a boy who can't seem to live up to his father's expectations, his mother is out of the picture, he's just been kicked off the basketball team, he just got his driver's license taken away because of seizures... and oh yeah, he's gay.
I'm only a few chapters in, but already I'm liking Thom's sarcastic wit and his crush on fellow superhero, Uberman. This book has great potential. I hope it lives up to expectations!
